The Heritage of the Orkhon Valley

For centuries, the legendary Orkhon Valley has stood at the center of Mongolian civilization. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the valley preserves the legacy of ancient empires, sacred monasteries, and nomadic culture.

Fed by countless rivers flowing from the Hangai Mountains, the Orkhon River stretches over 1,100 kilometers across Mongolia’s heartland before joining the Selenge River in the north. Along its banks, travelers discover breathtaking landscapes, dramatic waterfalls, volcanic plains, and archaeological treasures dating back more than a thousand years.

The region is also renowned for its rich wildlife and excellent fishing opportunities, with species including taimen, pike, sturgeon, and river perch inhabiting its pristine waters. A highlight of the valley is the spectacular Orkhon Waterfall, Mongolia’s largest waterfall, surrounded by lava fields and lush green meadows.

Erdene Zuu Monastery is Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monastery and one of the country’s most sacred cultural landmarks. Built in 1586 upon the ruins of ancient Karakorum, the monastery was constructed using stones and materials from the former imperial capital. 

Surrounded by its iconic wall adorned with 108 stupas, Erdene Zuu reflects the spiritual grandeur of Mongolia’s Buddhist heritage. Despite surviving political purges and destruction during the 20th century, the monastery remains an enduring symbol of faith, resilience, and Mongolian artistry. Visitors can admire beautifully preserved temples, intricate Buddhist artwork, ancient sculptures, and the tranquil atmosphere of this sacred site.

Known as the “Mini Gobi,” Elsen Tasarkhai is a stunning landscape where rolling sand dunes meet green grasslands and forested mountains.This unique contrast of ecosystems creates one of Central Mongolia’s most photogenic destinations. Travelers can enjoy camel rides across the dunes, horseback adventures through nearby valleys, and authentic encounters with local nomadic families.

The ancient Turkic monuments of Hushuu Tsaidam are among Mongolia’s most important archaeological treasures. Dedicated to the memory of Bilge Khan, one of the greatest rulers of the Turkic Empire, these remarkable stone inscriptions date back to the 8th century and represent some of the oldest written records in Central Asia.

Ugii Lake is a peaceful freshwater lake celebrated for its rich birdlife and serene scenery.A paradise for photographers and nature lovers, the lake attracts migratory birds from across Asia and offers excellent opportunities for fishing, horseback riding, and relaxing lakeside experiences.
